Portrait-robot des nouveaux managing directors promus chez Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley a officiellement dévoilé la liste 2015 de ses nouveaux managing directors. Managing director est devenu un poste de prestige très prisé en banque d’investissement. Et pour cause, il n’y a pas de bond salarial plus important dans la carrière d’un banquier d’investissement que celui réalisé entre le grade de directeur et celui de managing director : +43% pour atteindre une moyenne de 530 k€ en moyenne, hors variable.
Les vice-presidents (VP) et les directeurs stagnent dans leur job et rares sont ceux qui réussissent l’exploit d’être promu MD. Cette année, Morgan Stanley a promu 151 MD, un chiffre en légère baisse par rapport au 153 chanceux de l’an dernier. Les femmes représentent 22% des collaborateurs promus. Le profil LinkedIn de Gregory Boulot, de la division Real Estate, montre un parcours « classique » : après avoir décroché son diplôme à HEC, des stages en investment banking chez Goldman Sachs et Credit Suisse, et une embauche comme analyste M&A chez Lazard à Paris avant d’être débauché par Morgan Stanley deux ans plus tard en 2004.
Deux autres Français à Londres ont rejoint les rangs des MD à Londres avec des parcours assez différents : d’une part, Olivier Masdebrieu, un ingénieur diplômé de l’ENSIMAG employé depuis 18 ans au sein du pôle investment banking de Morgan Stanley, après un court début de carrière chez AirFrance et, d’autre part, Mathias Pestre-Mazieres, promu au sein du groupe Energy Investment banking EMEA. Ce collaborateur avec une triple diplôme (Polytechnique, Sciences Po, ENA) a été recruté comme vice-president chez Morgan Stanley en 2007, après avoir fait ses classes chez un concurrent J.P.Morgan, pendant 6 ans.
Au-delà des rares cas français, que nous apprend la promotion 2015 sur vos chances de parvenir un jour au poste de MD dans une grande banque d’investissement ? Des résultats qui ne sont pas sans surprises.
Alors que les analystes parlent d’un déclin de la banque d’investissement en Europe, Londres a en fait connu une hausse de promotions cette année, soit 36 MD promus contre 27 l’an passé. Même surprise du côté des métiers : les banquiers d’affaires ont beau avoir le vent en pour et le métier de trader connaître de vraies difficultés, Morgan Stanley a, elle, décidé d’augmenter plus significativement le nombre de recrus dans sa division markets. Enfin, si l’an passé a vu une hausse des promotions dans le middle office et les systèmes d’information, la promotion 2015 a fait la part belle aux générateurs de revenus.
