What is the US Corporate Tax group responsible for?

The US Corporate Tax team oversees U.S. corporate resources, requirements and responsibilities related to matters affecting the development and filing of all US corporate tax returns and positions, matters surrounding the consolidated global tax provision and related separate company provisions and on the utilization of external tax services for the resolution of tax issues and problems. Interfaces with business unit to understand the direction of the business, changes in operations, and to advise management of changes to tax laws that may impact operations. Advises management of the tax impact of changes in US corporate structure, location of businesses and personnel and impact of proposed or enacted tax legislation.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of the Director - US Corporate Tax?

  • U.S. Corporate Tax Planning
    • Interfaces with business unit heads to understand the direction of the business, changes in operations, and to advise Sr. Management of changes to tax laws that may impact operations
    • Advises Sr. Management of the tax impact of changes in corporate structure, location of businesses and personnel and impact of proposed or enacted tax legislation
  • Global Tax Provision
    • Responsible for the oversight of the global tax provision
    • Review and sign off of the effective tax rate, the global tax provision, footnotes included in the financial statements, and other disclosures as required
  • Tax Legislative Review
    • Monitors Federal, State and Local legislative and regulatory developments in the corporate area and works with industry lobby groups to promote the best interest of the Firm
  • Oversee U.S. corporate
    • Oversee the management of all U.S. corporate tax, including maintenance of quality standards and consistency of tax positions
    • Develop and implement all tax policies and procedures with respect to U.S. federal, state and local corporate tax matters
    • Oversee US and state and local tax audits

What ideal qualifications, skills and experience would help someone to be successful?
  • An advance degree in law (a Juris Doctorate degree), in tax (an MS degree in taxation) or in a related field (an MBA/MS in Business Administration/Finance) with a substantial concentration of course work in tax
  • Minimum of 10 years of general corporate tax experience with substantial exposure to issues on the taxation of corporations, partnerships and extensive experience accounting areas which overlap with tax including but not limited to FAS 109, FIN 48 and FAS 123R.
  • A general tax background with experience in the taxation of financial institutions, taxation of securities transactions, regulated investment companies and experience with international transactions.
  • The successful candidate will be certified as an attorney (member of a state bar), or as a public accountant (CPA)
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Advanced computer skills including all Microsoft Office business applications, various online research tools and other tax and financial applications
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and highly developed organizational skills
  • Strong analytical skills regarding difficult tax issues and the ability to independently develop effective tax positions in support of the Franklin Resources and its subsidiaries and the Franklin Templeton Group of Funds
