We're seeking a uniquely qualified Credit Associate with a deep interest in public policy and public finance to join our deep and experienced municipal credit research team. This position offers an exciting opportunity for individuals with strong research skills that are interested in learning how various state and local governmental units access the capital markets and conduct their operations, as well as what challenges lie ahead for public finance borrowers. This position will put you at the intersection of public policy and the capital markets.

You'll also have the rare opportunity to learn fundamental municipal credit analysis from the ground up at a municipal bond manager, while working in a collaborative environment with a team of experienced and collegial credit analysts. You'll have the chance to work collectively with portfolio managers and other groups at PIMCO on an array of projects to further the team's goals and client objectives.

Location: Solana Beach, CA or Chicago, IL

Responsibilities:

As a Credit Associate, you'll primarily be responsible for supporting the research activities of the team, in addition to conducting municipal credit rating surveillance on existing holdings, and aiding in the publishing of research reports on a variety of municipal sectors, and handling other research projects that arise. In addition, you'll:
  • Learn fundamental municipal credit analysis through our in-house training program, which includes mastering economic, financial, debt and ESG (environmental, social and governance) risk analysis
  • Aid in the completion of comprehensive credit surveillance and supporting market opportunities identified by portfolio managers
  • Conduct detailed media surveillance and monitoring to discover credit events, news, and trends
  • Assist in research and writing of credit reports on individual credits, sectors, and municipal credit trends
  • Perform ad hoc projects
  • Maintain database integrity
Qualifications:

Our qualified candidate should be intellectually curious and excited to analyze financial statements and budgets as well as research an array of topical public policy issues, such as: local economic trends, public pensions, retiree healthcare benefits, school funding formulas, state budget and statute changes, climate change impacts and other environmental concerns. You'll also have:
  • BA/BS degree required;
  • MPA or MPP highly desirable, or at least 2 years of experience in the public sector (anything involving capital planning or public finance is a significant plus though not required) or in the municipal market
  • Rating Agency experience - especially in the local government sector - is a positive, though not a requirement
  • Experience in financial industry coupled with a demonstrated interest in either municipals or public policy can substitute for public sector experience
  • Strong analytical ability and quantitative skills
  • Ability to balance multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate with a diverse team that includes other credit analysts, portfolio managers, quantitative analysts, and client facing teams
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely to varied audiences
  • History of demonstrating initiative and an ability to work independently
  • Innovative, detail oriented, and well organized
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint
PIMCO follows a total compensation approach when rewarding employees which includes a base salary and a discretionary bonus. Base salary is the fixed component of compensation that is determined by core job responsibilities, relevant experience, internal level, and market factors. The discretionary bonus is used to award performance and therefore is determined by company, business, team, and individual performance.

Salary Range: $ 86,000.00 - $ 94,000.00
