The Director of Risk Management is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the Investment Risk functions that support the growth and increasing complexity of Franklin Templeton's global asset management business, with a focus on Alternatives, multi-asset solutions and ETFs.

The Director of Risk Management is a key member of the Investment Risk Management organization and business partner with Chief Investment Officers of the covered portfolio groups, manage a team of risk professionals, and interact closely with portfolio managers as consultants to more fully integrate investment risk management into the investment decision processes within each group. Investment Risk responsibilities span three fundamental constituents: 1) portfolio teams; 2) fund boards; 3) and clients/prospective clients. The Risk team also has leadership roles in key firm-wide committees.

The Director of Risk Management position requires a solid understanding of global multi-asset strategies, statistical and technical foundations of quantitative risk and financial models, and excellent judgment in order to determine the risk and portfolio issues to be communicated to the portfolio manager and/or escalated within the Risk organization and to the CEO. This role also requires advanced partnership and communication skills to ensure the portfolio teams understand and incorporate risk information effectively.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of the Director of Investment Risk?

  • Work with Portfolio Managers to understand their investment process and how they define risk, and providing analytics and advice on risk budgeting, risk decomposition and performance attribution analytics and supporting market / client service effort to ensure that a robust investment risk framework is consistently applied in developing and managing investment products.
  • Help portfolio managers tailor exposure and optimize risk/reward.
  • Implement appropriate measures to identify, define, measure and communicate investment risks in the investment portfolios.
  • Measure and communicate the performance impact of past risks by effectively using performance attribution information.
  • Integrate risk and quantitative strategy into the new product development and approval process.
  • Manage a team of risk professionals to integrate investment risk management into the investment process firm wide.
  • Work with his/her team as well as with other Risk group colleagues to ensure effectiveness in client meetings, reporting, board communications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the key firm-wide committees, and lead the discussion in those committees leveraging his/her in-depth knowledge of portfolios risks.
  • Provide guidance and support to the team to ensure high quality service to senior management, portfolio teams, marketing/client service colleagues, and fund boards.
  • Build relationships with key internal clients within the portfolio management teams to ensure investment risk is considered at each step of the investment process.
  • Continuously evaluate risk and performance attribution systems, technologies and methods with a goal of continuously enhancing the Risk group's capabilities. Integrate risk, performance data and quantitative strategy into the RFP and marketing/client service process.

What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?
  • Requires 10+ years of Risk Management experience in multi-asset strategies , including complex securities, derivatives, hedge funds, real estate, in addition to traditional asset classes.
  • Previous senior leadership and work experience in the investment management field, with comprehensive knowledge of financial markets and instruments.
  • MBA or Master's degree in a relevant discipline required.
  • CFA and/or FRM designation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to be decisive think strategically and work effectively as a partner to portfolio teams.
  • Strong client management and presentation skills with the ability to work effectively with both internal and external clients.
  • Broad exposure to risk management disciplines, including a strong background in market, credit and liquidity risk.
  • In-depth understanding of portfolio management and construction process.
  • Solid understanding of risk and performance attribution systems and methodology.
  • Capable of providing intellectual leadership and guidance within the risk department and with partners in other departments.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically (25%-50%).
