Head of Macroeconomics and Market Research

oversee and maintain Cbus' scenario analysis framework which helps inform asset allocation decisions and conduct broader capital market analysis.

Cbus is one of Australia’s largest industry superannuation funds and the national industry fund for the construction, building, infrastructure and allied industries. Established in 1984, Cbus provides superannuation benefits to approximately 750,000 members, has assets over $40 billion, and accepts contributions from more than 128,000 employers.  Cbus is genuinely committed to delivering workplace diversity, inclusion and flexible working arrangements as an enabler of our purpose – to act in the best interest of our members and maximise their retirement outcomes.

Cbus is in the process of expanding its Asset Allocation Team to include a Head of Macroeconomic and Markets Research.  The successful candidate will oversee and maintain Cbus’ scenario analysis framework which helps inform asset allocation decisions. The role will also be responsible for broader capital market analysis, which includes the formulation of capital market models, the economic assumptions which are incorporated into these models and the detailed research into macroeconomics and financial market issues which are important to portfolio outcomes.

With the aim of maximising the benefits of insights across its Investment Management Team, Cbus’ uses a “total portfolio” approach for portfolio construction, as opposed to managing asset allocation and each asset class portfolio independently.  Cbus’ scenario framework and capital market assumptions are formulated with a “total portfolio” approach in mind.

This role offers considerable scope for the successful candidate to shape and enhance Cbus’ capital market research capability.  As a senior member of the Investment Management Team, the Head of Macroeconomic and Markets Research will also be expected to contribute to Cbus’ overall thinking in relation to portfolio construction and investment strategy.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have extensive experience in scenario development, economic forecasting, investment strategy and portfolio construction/management.  You will also need to possess exceptional analytical and problem solving skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills as the ability to liaise across a wide range of investment professionals both internally and externally will be a core component of this role. A strong academic background ideally with tertiary qualifications in econometrics, economics and/or finance would be favoured highly.

While we are aiming to recruit someone to the role based on the key selection criteria provided in the position description, we are also interested in receiving applications from candidates with moderately less experience than this role requires who believe they could ‘grow’ into the role in the short term.
