We are seeking an Application Developer Senior Programmer to join the Equities Cash Technology team in Sydney. The successful candidate will be responsible for enhancing and maintaining the suite of real-time trading systems which support the Equities Cash business. This technology includes a set of proprietary systems built in Java & vendor systems including IRESS Order System. This is a business-facing role, so the candidate should be able to maintain strong lines of communication with business stakeholders, and be able to work under pressure. In addition, the individual will be expected to work with other local, regional and global technology teams to deliver class-leading solutions in the Equities Cash space.
The successful candidate must possess exceptional software engineering and development capabilities in Java (C# knowledge is highly desirable) and Linux (Red Hat) skills. FIX protocol knowledge and previous experience of working in a front-office systems, including IRESS, is also viewed favourably.

  • Be part of the development technology team of in-house & vendor (IRESS) components serving the equities cash business in Australia
  • Work with the equity business to understand their business and requirements
  • Be a contributing member of the local, regional and global teams to design and continually enhance the technology systems.
  • Reporting Line - In-country Cash Technology Head

  • Very strong capabilities in Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) techniques / methodologies
  • Excellent knowledge of Java (C# desirable)
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies including associated software development life-cycles.
  • Ability to conceive technical solutions that best meet business requirements taking into account recommended technologies, non-functional requirements, internal policies and procedures, effort and schedule.
  • Sound knowledge of Linux (RedHat), knowledge of RDBMS (Sybase & SQL Server) helpful.
  • Knowledge of third-party Market Data provider platforms (eg: Reuters), and vendor platforms (IRESS) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Shell and Perl scripting.
  • Good problem solving/troubleshooting skills.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate technical concepts to various audiences (both business and technology) at appropriate level in clear and concise manner.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision on multiple concurrent projects.


  • Formal training and experience with Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) techniques / methodologies and related tools.
  • Experience (3 years+) with analysis and design in a real-time environment, preferably gained in a financial trading systems environment
  • Solid experience in performance analysis and tuning of latency/throughput sensitive applications.
  • Experience in documenting, coordinating and conducting Unit, System/Integration and User Acceptance Testing.
  • Degree in computer science, information technology or engineering
