Arthur financial have partnered with a leading commercial insurer to assist with the hire of a Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to manage their European operations. The role will be based in Luxembourg and you will be part of the senior executive leadership operating across several European branches,

The Chief Risk Officer, will be responsible for risk management of the groups European operations, The role is the risk management key function holder for the business and will require regulatory approval.

The business writes  hundreds of millions in gross written premium through several branches across Europe. The insurer offers a broad spectrum of products and services across the Casualty, Marine and Specialty classes. 

Key responsibilities will include but not limited to; 

  • Senior risk management leadership forming part of the wider leadership team.
  • Work with management and the Board to ensure that risk and capital are embedded in analysis and decision making processes.
  • Develop and deliver a risk management strategy that supports the delivery of overall strategic goals.
  • Maintain an open and co-operative relationship with regulators and external stakeholders.
  • Promote and drive a pro-active risk culture with the group.
  • Ensure the risk management framework, including risk register and reporting, is effective and that risk owners are empowered to take responsibility for their risks.
  • Ensure that business planning and new business developments are adequately reviewed and challenged
  • Act as the key point of contact for regional managers and legal representatives
  • Ensure the appropriate risk appetites are set to support strategy and control the business 
  • Work as part of the wider Risk team in London, supporting wider risk management activities and initiatives
  • Drive a high performance culture through leading by example and setting the tone for the organisation.
  • Prepare the Risk Committee papers, monitor regulatory capital requirements and coordinate the ORSA
  • Attend and report to governance forums, including the Risk Committee, as required.
  • Support the Group  CRO as appropriate on various Group projects and commercial and strategic matters


Experience and Skills Required

  • Proven track record of senior risk roles within general commercial  insurance operations
  • Direct experience within the European with knowledge of regulatory requirements within Luxembourg
  • Strong influencer who has proven ability to achieve results
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Minimum 8+ years Risk experience across Risk management and governance frameworks.
  • Practical understanding of underwriting risk, disciplines and processes
  • Risk or actuarial qualification desirable
  • Fluency in French desirable but not essential
