Lead Python DeveloperAbout Octopus
For the last 17 years we at the Octopus Group have been applying our inquisitive nature in sectors such as investments, healthcare and energy.
Across all our businesses, we now have more 400,000 customers and our investments have put more than £8.3 billion into the UK economy. We plan to keep on building businesses that will improve the lives of millions of people, because we want Octopus to be a company we'll be proud to tell our grandchildren about.
About the role
We're looking for a lead developer to join a new business that's being seeded within Octopus Labs, the fintech and innovation unit of Octopus.
We're big believers in the powerful role that financial advice can play. It can transform lives for the better - helping people realise their aspirations, combat their anxieties and, well, live a better life.
The new business you'd be joining is dedicated to developing new technology that can make the advice experience not only more efficient for advisers, but also simpler, more satisfying and more rewarding for customers.
We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, empathetic and talented Python developer to join and lead our backend team - with ultimate oversight for the architecture and execution of our technology roadmap.
What you'll be doing: essential job functions
As lead developer you'll...
- Take ownership for the technology vision that'll underpin the product roadmap
- Work with the business to plan and prioritise the technology roadmap, then leading a engineering team to execute on it
- Review, test and approve code
- Mentor junior developers and instil a culture of curiosity, where everyone's eager to learn and try new things
What we're looking for: job specific skills and experience
Above all, we're looking for someone with a real hunger to build technology that provides an absolutely epic experience for the customers who'll be using it. That means you'll have...
A superb understanding of Python. Experience of deploying it within financial services is a nice-to-have, but isn't essential
A knowledge of SQL, and a readiness to learn other languages if required. In fact, you'll be curious and eager to learn full stop.
Patience and empathy: you'll be able to work with the business to plan requirements and relay progress.
A strong and flexible work ethic. You'll love getting stuff done, and will be at home in a young, dynamic, fast-paced and energetic team
Great communication skills. You'll be a fluent English speaker, and comfortable training, mentoring and working alongside other developers
What's in it for you?
Very competitive salary
Comprehensive benefits package, including generous holiday allowance, private healthcare and a host of workplace rewards
Flexible working hours and a fun space in our cosy, central London start-up space
An awesome team of smart, fun and energetic colleagues from all walks of life
A working environment that combines the exciting pace and confidence of a start-up, with the broader benefits of a large, well-capitalised group of companies
You'll feel right at home if you're...
Helpful: random acts of kindness make the workplace a better place. So, go out of your way to be helpful, and give people reasons to smile.
Straightforward: life is complicated enough. Don't make it harder for yourself, or for others. Sometimes the simplest approach works wonders.
Bold: every great business started with a flash of inspiration. If you've got a great idea, don't keep it to yourself.
Send your CV and we'll go from there!
