Department & Team Profile

Operations & Compliance Technology (OCT) comprises of functionally aligned development teams who support critical firm functions such as Legal, Compliance and Operations. OCT develops strategic solutions that support key business processes, including Settlements, Confirmations, Regulatory Reporting, Position Keeping, Anti-Money Laundering and Trade Surveillance.

The Pre-Settlements Practice area within OCT is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of trades, ensuring that they are correctly settled with the counterparty. Typically this is done through the generation of cash payment instructions that are ultimately settled via the SWIFT network, but Pre-Settlements also interacts with an number of other settlement platforms both internally and externally (such as clearing houses). Additionally the platform is responsible for producing journals that are essential to for the firm’s books and records, as well as for producing client statements. The platform is used by over 600 Morgan Stanley employees, and is developed and maintained by a global team of developers, QA and production support staff.

Role Profile

We are looking for a front end development lead with experience of building/designing web-based user interfaces. The Pre-Settlements team is looking to replace its current fat-client UI with a web-based offering, so this is an excellent opportunity to work on a greenfield development project and provide the foundations for the team’s renovated user interface. The role will involve using the latest firm recommended technologies to build, from the ground-up, a brand new user interface that will interact with the existing Pre-Settlements platform. Therefore we are looking for candidates with practical knowledge of working with the latest web based technologies to develop usable and performant interfaces.

The Pre-Settlements development team is based in three locations – Mumbai, London and Montreal, with existing front-end developers in each. A successful candidate will be able to work closely with colleagues across multiples regions to deliver high-quality solutions by the required deadline. A successful candidate will also have an excellent understanding of the latest web technologies and be able to demonstrate that they have successfully used these skills to produce usable and performant products. The candidate will be expected to work with a number of different teams, including QA and production support and must be comfortable communicating with end users.

The platform’s core business logic is written in Java and uses a large Sybase database as its persistence layer. A successful candidate should have experience with Java 8 alongside experience working with a relational database.



Qualifications:

Required Skills

- Experience with HTML, Javascript, CSS, XSLT and one or more JavaScript frameworks such as AngularJS, ExtJS, Jquery etc. - building event driven interfaces with a focus on user experience and performance
- Experience in MVC frameworks
- SQL and Relational Databases (ideally Sybase though any relational database is acceptable)
- Experience developing and deploying web applications using Tomcat and Apache
- Experience with writing Java 8
- Understanding of the SDLC, SCM, Agile and Scrum methodologies
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience working with team members across multiple locations
- Experience of leading team members across multiple locations

Desired Skills

- Unix shell scripting
- Integration technologies - MQ/Xml/SOAP/JSON/Protocol Buffers/Spring.
- Build & agile - Ant, Gradle/Maven, Sonar, Jenkins/Hudson, GIT/perforce.
- Sound understanding of Object Oriented Analysis, Design and Programming.
- Unix shell scripting
- Knowledge of the Trade lifecycle
- Knowledge of web development progression, latest trends in the industry
- Experience with full lifecycle application testing (functional, regression, performance, integration, etc.)
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Knowledge of Enterprise Architecture Patterns, GoF design
- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment.
